AI in Energy Sector
The power sector is at the vanguard of efforts to mitigate climate change with decarbonisation of the sector - a critical enabling step for the decarbonisation of transport, heat, industry and other sectors.
In this workshop, we will explore the applications of AI that support and enable decarbonisation in this sector as well as exploring the impact and opportunities brought about by the digital transformation the sector is undergoing.
Aidan is an Associate Professor in Energy and Artificial Intelligence at UCL Energy Institute where he leads the Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence Lab which is focused on applications of AI in the energy system with a particular focus on the power sector.
He is the founding course director for the Energy Systems and Data Analytics MSc, an innovative program that combines the study of energy systems and sustainability with data science and machine learning. Aidan holds a Bachelor’s of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University College Cork, Ireland, and an MSc in Bio-Engineering from Imperial College London. He was awarded a Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics from the Imperial College of London for his thesis on Bayesian Latent Variable Models.Prior to joining UCL, he was a researcher in the Civil Engineering Department MIT as part of the Intelligent Transport Systems Lab. This position also took him to Singapore as part of the Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) where he worked with the Singapore Land Transport Authority on transport models.Aidan was awarded a Turing Fellowship in 2018 from the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s leading center for AI and data science research. He is the UK’s representative to the European Energy Research Alliance for the joint program on digitalization and expert advisor to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Innovates UK on the Modernising Energy Data Access program. He is program chair for the AI and Climate initiative at the UNESCO International Research Centre on AI, (IRCAI). In media, his work has been featured in Forbes, Times, and the World Economic Forum and he has authored articles for World Energy Magazine. He was a speaker at a number of conferences including the SLUSH tech conference and Australia Energy Week where he gave the international keynote address.
